Grounding the voice – singing from feet and pelvis.

Listen to me! – Listen to you by what right? (– My divine right if you must, I am your king! – No, you’re not. You told me so yourself, you said you didn’t want it.) Why should I waste my time listening to –Because I have a voice!

– from the film: The King’s Speech

Your voice belongs to you!

In my work it is not about forming a voice that matches certain aesthetic ideas.

It is about creating space so that a sound can arise from within you, vibrate and spread. At the centre of this practice is always your own perception – she is your actual teacher, who guides you – at all times, infallibly and indisputably.

This work is for everyone who wants to rediscover their voice and use it with more freedom and efficiency. It speaks to amateurs as well as professionals in singing, speaking, acting and performance who want to reclaim their voice and deepen their means of expression.

The voice begins in the body – not in the head.

For me, voice and body are inseparable and directly connected: sound becomes tangible, movement becomes audible.

Our voice is more than beautiful sound.

With our voice we make ourselves visible and audible, just as we are. It is an affirmation of life, an expression of existence. When we speak or sing, we do not just say words – we say: I am here. I am alive.

Your voice is unique! It deserves to be heard.

Your voice is not something you first have to find – it is already there.

A solid, healthy singing technique is a wonderful tool, but it is not an end in itself. It is not perfection that moves us humans, but truthfulness.

Perfection impresses us humans, but truthfulness is what moves us.

1:1 Guidance

I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world.

– Walt Whitman

Loafe with me on the gentle grass, loose the stop from your throat,
Not words, not music or rhyme I want, not custom or lecture, not even the best,
Only the lull I like, the hum of your valv’d voice.

– Walt Whitman

In 1:1 guidance we can focus entirely on your individual needs. I support you on your way to a deeper connection with yourself, your body and your voice.

In a safe space you can curiously set out on an inner journey of discovery, try things out and explore your voice. Whatever brings you here – I support you in your process.

Wenn man ans Meer kommt
soll man zu schweigen beginnen
bei den letzten Grashalmen
soll man den Faden verlieren
und den Salzschaum
und das scharfe Zischen des Windes einatmen
und ausatmen
und wieder einatmen
Wenn man den Sand sägen hört
und das Schlurfen der kleinen Steine
in langen Wellen
soll man aufhören zu sollen
und nicht mehr wollen wollen nur Meer
Nur Meer

FAQ

Who is this work for?

This work is for everyone who is looking for encounter: with themselves and with others, with the body and with the outside world. It is for anyone who wants to bring somatic approaches into their work beyond traditional singing lessons and who longs for an authentic vocal expression. It is for amateurs and professionals, for stage people as well as people in therapeutic professions, and for everyone who uses their voice for singing or speaking.

Where do the lessons take place?

Lessons take place in the centre of Jena or online.

What do I need to bring?

No prior experience is needed. All you need is curiosity and the courage to meet yourself.

Is there a particular genre that is covered?

No. You sing what you want to sing. You tell, share and shape what inspires you.

Is this more therapy or lessons?

Working with your own body and voice can be very healing. Even so, my lessons do not replace therapy.

Do I have to move a lot?

Moving and feeling your own body is essential to our work. It is not about athletic activity, though, but about perception, which can be refined ever more deeply. If you feel unsure about it, that is not a problem – you just need to be open to it.

Can I also do just body work without singing?

Yes, that is possible too.

What does functional voice pedagogy mean?

Functional voice pedagogy understands singing as a physiological process, guided by the idea that bodily processes are fundamentally organised in a meaningful way. Your own body is the measure my teaching is aligned with. My language is clear and immediately understandable. For me it is not about making a sound, but about finding the sound that wants to arise from within you.

What is Body-Mind-Centering?

Body-Mind-Centering® is a somatic practice in which the anatomy of the body is made tangible through your own perception. The structures and connections of all body systems, from the skeleton to fascia, nerves, organs and more, become experienceable in depth. Body-Mind-Centering® keeps placing the body in the context of embryonic development (ontogenesis) and of the evolutionary history of all living beings (phylogenesis). This practice allows a body awareness to develop that is more than instructions for correct posture or the like: it is the connection to your own physicality, full stop.

Manifesto

The voice is the most immediate instrument of human beings.

Long before tools existed, before strings were stretched or drums built, it was there – the breath that turned into sound. Through it people shared their feelings, called out to each other, told of fire, the hunt, rain, danger, joy and loss. It carried stories on, long before words held them. It was the first medium through which community arose.

Our history resonates in the voice. It is built into us; no external tool, no wood, no metal, no fur separates it from the world. Every sound arises from the innermost, takes shape from every impulse and steps outward unmediated. That is why the human voice touches us in a special way: it is archaic, intimate, familiar.

At the same time the voice is not only directed outward. When we speak or sing, we are always also listeners to our own expression. We experience our voice from inside and outside at once. It becomes a resonance space in which we meet ourselves: in vibration, breath and sound.

The voice carries memory, expression and relationship. It connects not only people with each other, but also a person with themselves. It is a bridge between inner and outer world, between past and present, between body and mind. Anyone who works with the voice always works with something deeply human – with the resonance space of our own history.

The voice is more than sound – it is the breath of humanity itself.
